Sound deadening consisted of removing every panel and every seat of the car and treating every area possible. To include carpet and headliner. The goal was to make this vehicle rattle-free and quiet.
The installation was completed by Octave Audio in Orlando, Florida.
Tweeter/Midrange
Midrange was mounted in the A-pillar with a slight angle to achieve the best frequency response as we could get without sacrificing visibility. It is not a sealed enclosure to allow room for the midrange to breathe and was lined with modeling clay and Black Hole Stuff was added to break up the back wave. Tweeters were mounted at the same angle as close as possible to the midrange.
Midbass
Midbass was installed in a modified factory location which is inside the dash. They are vented through the fender and lined with a hydrophobic mesh to ensure no water can ever get in. The inside was lined with non-hardening modeling clay and CLD.
Amp Rack/Subwoofer
I gave Octave the hard task of keeping the SUV still fully usable but having a killer look and man did he deliver in strides. There is extra attention to detail that ties into the look of the car. To start, you see two of the three Arc Audio amps. Those are the 1000.6 and they are positioned in such a way to show that one is dedicated to the left side and the other is dedicated to the right side. They are bridged to deliver 400 watts rms to each midbass and midrange. The other two channels on each amp drive the tweeter and the rear fill on each respective side, they are receiving 200 watts rms. The sub amp was hidden to keep everything symmetrical. In the middle, you see the brain of the system, the Helix Ultra. I wanted 12 channels just in case I wanted to do a 2-seat tune later on or add more equipment. Then of course the two Focal Utopia 10wm. Every detail was placed to tie the car and the whole system together. The box and amp rack are secured by four threaded mounting points which have been attached to the vehicle itself.
Wiring
Each wire is routed in such a way that it follows the OEM factory wiring. The 0 gauge power wire is routed through the left side of the vehicle while the speakers 16 gauge speaker wire is routed through the center of the vehicle. The cable for the director is routed through the right side of the vehicle. Zip ties are securing the wiring at least every 6 inches. Furthermore, there are pieces of Hush Mat tape throughout the wiring to eliminate any type of unwanted noise.
Detail
The black vinyl is automotive grade and it matches the exact pattern of the leather seats in the vehicle. The silver ties in the Focal Utopias but also the Silver trim running along the dash of the vehicle. Lastly, the three lines that go across the subs tie in the lines on the arc audio Amplifiers showing that the subs are powered by the same series amp even though you can’t see the sub amp. And to top it off, there are LED lights outlining the DSP and subs. It's the same color as the factory interior lights.
Lastly, he created a panel strong enough to be able to throw whatever I wanted in the back while still being acoustically transparent. Now the SUV is still fully functional and has a killer system.
The tuning was done by me. Using a combination of my JL Max and my ears. My goal was to have a system that represents a speakeasy type of vibe. Close and personal with lots of attack and detail. Imaging means everything to me so I wanted to make sure that my image was wide and stable with lifelike depth. I have been able to achieve my goals while still having a fairly stock-looking SUV.
